Established in 1885 as a regional museum, the institution expanded its collection significantly following the Czechoslavic Ethnographic Exhibition in Prague (1895). The core of the manuscript collection comprises religious works, predominantly prayer books, from the late 14th century onwards. Notable holdings include three 16th-century illuminated graduals originating from a local literary confraternity.
