Founded in the 10th century, Břevnov Monastery originally built a rich medieval library produced in its local scriptorium and expanded through bequests. Though most of the pre-Hussite library was probably lost during the Hussite Wars, subsequent centuries of acquisitions rebuilt the holdings. The collection consists of 301 manuscript volumes, including 11 medieval codices and a surviving library catalog fragment from 1390–1394. Confiscated in 1950 and restituted to the Benedictine Archabbey after 1991, the core manuscript collection remains on deposit at the National Library, while monastery archives, administrative volumes, and select manuscripts are housed at the National Archives in Prague.
